  9.  AB    OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the results obtained with the Anti retroviral
  10.        drugs Bank, set up by the National Commission of AIDS of Chile with the
  11.        physicians treating HIV/AIDS patients. This in order to increase the
  12.        quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS and the collaboration
  13.        between health authorities, National Commission of AIDS, and clinicians
  14.        involved in AIDS. METHOD: In December 1992 a Protocol of Antiretroviral
  15.        Therapy for Adults was set up by physicians that take care of HIV/AIDS
  16.        patients and the National Commission of AIDS from the Ministry of
  17.        Health. This protocol includes: conditions for treatment (CD4 < 300 x
  18.        mm3), conditions for exclusion (before or after the beginning),
  19.        laboratory studies (X ray, serologies, PPD skin test), periodic clinical
  20.        controls (monthly), interventions (500mg/d in 3-5 sumministration),
  21.        changes of treatment (reduction-suspension), chemoprophilaxis, other
  22.        aspects such as pregnancy or interaction with other medicines. AZT
  23.        distribution was made all over the country through the public health
  24.        services. RESULTS: After a year of accomplishment there was an increase
  25.        of 88.2% in the number of patients treated with Zidovudine (AZT)
  26.        therapy. In the latest '93 we also began supplying ddI and ddC as
  27.        substitution treatments. This programme covers the 86% of HIV/AIDS
  28.        patients that the Public Health system takes care. TABULAR DATA, SEE
  29.        ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: Health care workers must work together
  30.        with other sectors--including the economical one, in order to increase
  31.        efficiency and to obtain the access to expensive treatments providing
  32.        HIV/AIDS patients a better quality of medical care and quality of life.
